The United States Is Not Just A Place, It Is A Principle!

“I have sworn before you and Almighty God the same solemn oath our forbears prescribed…and yet the same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe–the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God.”

Inaugural Address of President John F. Kennedy
Washington, D.C.
January 20, 1961

The United States is not just a place, it is a principle

Constitution and Federalist PapersThis is not just a place, it is an idea, a concept that when put into practice became the United States of America!

In truth this place, this thing that we call the United States Of America is a principle that human beings should be free to exercise their rights in a framework that makes doing so possible because of the rule of law. That law is, in itself, a set of principles which has in mind to control the more difficult parts of human nature, while encouraging the the better side.

The nature of these principles

What are these ideas, these concepts, these principles, if you will?

The idea that God has endowed the individual with certain unalienable rights. Not that the government has given rights, but that God has given these rights. Men were born with these rights, but it took a while for a government to finally recognize these rights. Some it took longer than others to work out, some are still being processed, but in this nation, for the first time in the history of the world, a process was set in motion which would work toward freedom and equality for all.

These principles form our Constitution

If your viewpoint on something is different than mine, that is fine, as long as we both have the common viewpoint that we can work it out. If we have a common law, a common framework, and in our country, that is the constitution. This is the supreme law of our land, the document that allows us to work out our differences and still remain one nation. This is possible because it recognizes that the right to be free is not something that a government can give, but something a government must recognize!

The great American line in the sand

That is our constitution, that is our great dividing line! That is the insurmountable, intractable line which we can not allow to be crossed! The loss of this would be the loss of our nation! The loss of this would be the loss of the last greatest hope for human dignity and perhaps, human survival. That is why our representatives, our President, our military, and many others take an oath to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies! Without it, I fear that the world will slip into darkness and ignorance!

A word to immigrants

If you come to America to become an American, that is, if you come to be a part of our great melting pot of cultures and ideas with the idea of supporting and defending the great principles of our Constitution, Welcome! We are glad to have you. Your ideas and your distinctives will make us all stronger, smarter, more creative and better.

If you seek to come to America as a land, just as a land, not as a principle, we can not accept that, that does not make you a refugee, or an immigrant, at that point, you are an invader!
